Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil Faces Growing Resignation Demands Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations and Leaked Audio Clip

Thiruvananthapuram, August 24: Pressure is mounting on Congress MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil to resign following the release of a controversial audio clip, allegedly featuring him in a conversation with a woman he is accused of harassing and impregnating.

The clip, broadcast on Reporter TV, captures a male voice—believed to be that of Mamkoottathil—forcefully urging a woman to terminate her pregnancy. In the exchange, the woman insists she wishes to keep the child and will raise it independently, while the man warns her of the “consequences” of continuing the pregnancy.

At one point in the conversation, the male voice chillingly remarks: “If I wanted to kill you, how many seconds do you think it would take?”—prompting the woman to respond that he should “just kill her” if that is his intention.

The emergence of this audio has intensified scrutiny of Mamkoottathil, who was already facing allegations of inappropriate behavior. Earlier this month, actor and former journalist Rini Ann George claimed that a young Kerala politician had sent her offensive messages and invited her to a hotel room, further fueling speculation.

Congress Leader Steps Down From Youth Wing

On August 21, under mounting pressure from party colleagues and Youth Congress members, Mamkoottathil resigned from all organisational posts, including his position as Kerala Youth Congress President. He, however, denied being forced out by the party leadership.

“There are no complaints against me. No one has directly accused me of forcing an abortion. I am stepping down so that my colleagues don’t have to waste their time defending me,” he told reporters.

Senior Leaders React

Senior Congress leader T. N. Prathapan, speaking on August 23, stressed that the allegations are “serious” and reminded that public servants must remain “blemish-free in both public and private life.”

As demands for his resignation grow louder, the controversy has placed the Congress party in Kerala in a difficult position, especially with elections around the corner.
