When Amitabh Bachchan Was Taken Aback by Gupt’s Killer Twist: Director Rajiv Rai Recalls

New Delhi Chronicle – Entertainment Desk

Filmmaker Rajiv Rai’s 1997 suspense thriller Gupt is still remembered for its jaw-dropping twist — the unexpected revelation that Kajol’s character was the murderer. But it wasn’t just fans who were left stunned. According to Rai, even Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan was taken aback by the bold creative decision.

In a candid conversation on the Ravi Buleiy Official YouTube channel, Rai opened up about Bachchan’s reaction to the film’s shocking climax. The veteran actor, known for his deep ties with the Rai family — particularly with producer Gulshan Rai, Rajiv’s father — reportedly had strong opinions about the twist.

“Mr Bachchan was surprised — even a little upset,” Rai shared. “He asked me why I had made Kajol the killer and whether I thought the audience would accept such a twist.” The filmmaker admitted he was questioned sharply, but stood firm in his creative choice. “Just two days later, the film was a blockbuster. I think the results spoke for themselves.”

The conversation also touched upon Rai’s earlier interactions with Bachchan. Long before Gupt, during the early 1990s when the legendary actor was navigating a challenging phase in his career, Rai had approached him with a lead role written specifically for him. However, Bachchan turned it down, leading Rai to pursue other projects — including the 1994 hit Mohra, which went on to become a major success with Suniel Shetty in the lead.

Rai also looked back fondly on his early days as an assistant director on classic films like Trishul and Kaala Patthar, where he closely observed Bachchan’s dedication on set. That early exposure, he said, helped shape his approach as a director.

Both Gupt and Mohra have since earned cult status, but it’s clear that the stories behind their making are just as intriguing as what appeared on screen.
