New Delhi: In a notable judgment with wide social implications, the Supreme Court of India recently underlined the importance of financial independence for educated individuals, especially in the context of matrimonial disputes.
The apex court was hearing a contentious alimony case involving a woman who had been married for just 18 months. The woman, an IT professional holding an MBA degree, had approached the court seeking a high-value maintenance package that included ₹12 crore, a luxury flat in Mumbai, and a premium BMW vehicle.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria, took a firm view on the matter. The court questioned the justification for such substantial demands, given the brief duration of the marriage and the petitioner’s own qualifications.
“You’re an IT graduate with an MBA. Cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad have abundant opportunities. Why not work and support yourself?” the Chief Justice reportedly asked during the proceedings.
The bench emphasized the importance of self-reliance, particularly for individuals with the means and education to secure employment. It pointed out the disproportionate nature of the requested maintenance, especially since the marriage had lasted less than two years.
The petitioner argued that her husband, a financially well-off individual, had sought annulment on grounds including mental health concerns such as schizophrenia. She maintained that her lifestyle during the marriage justified her claims.
However, the court encouraged a more balanced resolution. It presented her with two options: accept a Mumbai flat without legal encumbrances or agree to a one-time settlement of ₹4 crore. The bench reiterated that seeking financial support should not become a substitute for personal responsibility, especially for those with access to professional avenues.
“You are well-educated. Relying entirely on monetary support undermines your dignity. You should earn and live with self-respect,” the Chief Justice remarked.
This ruling is expected to set a significant precedent in family law, particularly around interim maintenance claims in short-term marriages involving financially capable spouses.
