Seven passengers fall ill mid-flight; one hospitalised
Mumbai, June 28 : A Mumbai-bound Ethiopian Airlines flight made an emergency landing in the city early Friday morning after a cabin depressurisation incident left seven passengers unwell mid-flight.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was cruising at 33,000 feet over the Arabian Sea when it experienced a sudden loss of cabin pressure. In response, the pilots initiated an emergency descent to a lower altitude and diverted the flight for an immediate landing.
Flight ET640 touched down at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at approximately 1:42 a.m. Medical teams were on standby and promptly attended to the affected passengers. While most were treated at the airport, one individual required hospitalisation. As of now, no official statement has been released by Ethiopian Airlines or airport authorities regarding the incident.
This event comes just days after a similar health scare occurred on June 24 aboard an Air India flight from London to Mumbai. In that case, five passengers and two crew members aboard flight AI130 reported symptoms consistent with food poisoning, including nausea and dizziness.
The affected individuals received medical attention upon arrival and were later discharged. Although the airline acknowledged the incident, the cause remains under investigation. A source familiar with the matter suggested a potential issue with slow cabin depressurisation as a possible contributing factor.
With two such incidents occurring within the span of a week, concerns about in-flight safety and cabin conditions have come under renewed scrutiny.
